The Smelly Cat
Charlotte, NC
9/10
Tonight’s show was a lot of fun. Started off kinda slow and dead but after a while the place got packed and everyone really seemed to be enjoying the songs. It was great to see my buddy Katy after what seemed like forever!
I pulled out alot of tunes that either haven’t been played before or haven’t been played in a long time. I did a version of an old Phish tune called “Lifeboy” which I really liked playing. It’s such a quite, beautiful song that I think just has alot of beautiful words. I really had a good time but if another person asks me if I know any James Taylor I’m gonna scream. I mean, no offense to Taylor or those that love him, I’m a fan to but for Christ’s sake, there’s more to folk music than James Taylor and Jimmy Buffet! Broaden your horizons people!
I felt really relaxed last night. I did the whole gig pretty easily and just really felt relaxed and comfortable. The feedback I was getting from people was really positive! I’m glad I pulled out some new/old songs last night. Sometimes it gets so hard to play the “regulars” in the set that a new and unexplored song is quite welcomed into the sets. It gives me something to work with and to try and broaden with. I haven’t written a new song in a while so by doing some of these new covers, it’s really helped to break the monotony! I’m working on a new one now about a certain Charlotte venue that I can’t wait to finish and start playing!
All in all, a great first show of the New Year and I’m really happy with how it went. The vibes were good and the feedback I got last night was very positive and promising! I love playing that place and am looking forward to many shows there in the near future!
